Naturevest

The Paulownia trees absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide, and their wood is used to craft doors, window frames, and furniture.

Naturevest is a project based in Croatia that facilitates carbon offsetting through the Anna Paulownia tree (Paulownia). Officially classified as a crop, this tree captures an impressive amount of carbon dioxide. The project area is located south of the capital city, Zagreb. Approximately 150,000 Paulownia trees now thrive across 187 hectares of land.

Contribution to the climate

The Naturevest project utilizes carbon farming as a method for carbon offsetting. Carbon farming involves capturing carbon dioxide in the soil and in biomass - in this case: in the wood of the trees. The Naturevest project specifically chose Paulownia trees due to their exceptionally rapid growth; these trees can reach a height of ten to fifteen meters in just about ten years. During this period, they absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide. When the carbon absorption begins to decline over time, the trees are harvested, and new Paulownia trees are planted. This way, the forest repeatedly fulfills its purpose on the same plot of land.

The harvested Paulownia wood is used extensively, from the trunk to the crown, for various applications such as doors, window frames, and furniture. Additionally, the fibers are compressed into raw materials for bio-based construction.

Project organization

Management of this project

Naturevest has transformed unused land to make it suitable for carbon farming. A dedicated team, led by a plantation manager, is responsible for maintaining the project area and tending to the Paulownia trees.

Project accountability

To bring Naturevest's carbon credits to the market, the project has undergone the following steps:

  1. The project developer, Naturevest, conducted a feasibility study to assess whether the project could issue carbon credits.

  2. Naturevest registered the project with Proba.

  3. Bureau Veritas d.o.o. validated the project documentation and the carbon removal claims.

  4. Bureau Veritas d.o.o. and an independent auditor review the project data annually to ensure the performance meets the required conditions.

  5. Proba issued carbon offsetting certificates to Naturevest. Ecommit subsequently purchased carbon offsetting certificates from this project. All data and transactions are available in Proba's registry.

Contribute to this project

Naturevest owns 300 hectares of land. Currently, 187 hectares are planted with Paulownia trees. Planting the remaining 113 hectares requires time, funding, and manpower. The financing needed to plant more trees is made possible through the issuance of carbon credits. By purchasing carbon credits for your company, you support this project and contribute to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
