MTPL

The MTPL project encourages farmers in India to use their land for climate-focused initiatives.

Mangalam Timber Products Limited (MTPL) operates its project in eastern India, across the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The initiative started on a small plot of land and has now expanded to over 14,000 hectares. Reforestation is used as a key method to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Contribution to the climate

The MTPL project involves planting eucalyptus trees. Eucalyptus grows rapidly, allowing the trees to absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide. After just five years, the trees can be harvested for the first time. This creates a dual benefit: the wood is processed in the Mangalam Timber factory, while new growth ensures continued carbon offsetting. The eucalyptus forest continues to perform its role time and again.

The land used for planting these trees had been abandoned for decades and severely eroded by wind and water. With the launch of the project, the soil has been intensively cultivated, transforming it into fertile ground for eucalyptus trees. The trees also prevent further erosion, protecting the land for the future.

Project Organization

Management of this project

Mangalam Timber Products Limited collaborates closely with local farmers for this initiative. These farmers plant and care for the eucalyptus trees on their land. Land that previously generated no income for its owners now provides them with a sustainable source of revenue. In addition to being used for carbon offsetting by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the trees also serve as a valuable raw material for the timber industry.

Project accountability

To bring MTPL carbon credits to the market, the project has completed the following steps:

  1. The project developer, Mangalam Timber Products Limited, now part of Mangalam Cement Limited, conducted a feasibility study to assess whether the project could issue carbon credits.

  2. Mangalam Timber Products Limited registered the project with Verra.

  3. An independent auditor validated the project documents and the carbon removal claims.

  4. Verra issued carbon offsetting certificates to Mangalam Timber Products Limited. Ecommit subsequently purchased carbon offsetting certificates from this project. All data and transactions are recorded and accessible in Verra's registry.

  5. A third-party observer verifies shortly after planting whether a sufficient number of trees have been planted. Over the following three years, they monitor whether the appropriate mix of tree species is maintained on the plots, the land is properly cultivated, and the boundaries of the parcels are respected.

Enabled by carbon credits

Contribute to this project

The MTPL project encourages farmers in three Indian states to use their land for climate-focused purposes. This approach transforms unused land into a resource that benefits both nature and the landowners. Farmers participating in the project receive seedlings, fertilizers, and technical support to manage their land effectively. The land management efforts are funded through the issuance of carbon credits.

By purchasing carbon credits for your business, you support this project and contribute to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
