XiCO2e: Mexican Reforestation Project

Gmelina trees grow quickly and are therefore ideal for absorbing carbon.

XiCO2e: Mexican Reforestation Project is a project that ensures carbon absorption in trees. Fast-growing Gmelina trees are planted on abandoned farmland and grasslands. The project is located in two states in southeastern and northeastern Mexico and covers 1,219 hectares.

Contribution to the climate

In the XiCO2e: Mexican Reforestation Project, abandoned farmland and grasslands are being planted with Gmelina trees. In the states of Tabasco and Tamaulipas, in southeastern and northeastern Mexico, respectively, these forests remove carbon from the air. The Gmelina is a fast-growing tree, making this species very suitable for this purpose. The carbon is absorbed into the wood of the tree and into the soil itself. The land was in poor condition, and planting trees in this way restores the areas and prevents soil erosion.

Project organization

Management of this project

The XiCO2e: Mexican Reforestation Project leases land from small and medium-sized private landowners. Previously, the project area was used for agricultural activities. Since 2017, reforestation activities have been introduced and high-quality technologies are being applied to improve the quality of these areas where there was previously no forestry culture.

Project accountability

In order to bring carbon credits from XiCO2e: Mexican Reforestation Project to market, the project has completed the following steps:

  1. Project developers Ala-BoOl Trust and Forliance conducted a feasibility study to assess whether the project could issue carbon credits for carbon offsetting.

  2. Ala-BoOl Trust and Forliance registered the project with Verra.

  3. AENOR CONFIA, S.A. validated the project documents and carbon removal claims.

  4. AENOR INTERNACIONAL S.A.U. periodically checks the project data to see whether performance meets the set conditions.

  5. Verra has issued carbon credits to Ala-BoOl Trust. Ecommit has subsequently purchased carbon credits from this project. All data and transactions can be viewed in the Verra registry.

Contribute to this project

Managing and potentially expanding the project requires time, money, and manpower. The financing needed to make this reforestation project work is made possible by the issuance of carbon credits. When your company purchases carbon credits, you support this project and contribute to reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

The project activities also have an important social impact: the reforestation plantations provide employment for people in the region. This helps to combat poverty and improves the quality of life of the workers.
