How will we achieve net-zero emissions by 2050? And how will we move forward after 2050?
The European Union’s climate goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To realize this ambition, emissions must be reduced rapidly. In addition, solutions are needed to remove the carbon that is still being emitted from the atmosphere. These solutions are particularly crucial in sectors where emission reductions are not yet feasible or where there are no alternatives yet for lowering carbon emissions.
Another fact is that even after 2050, carbon offsetting will remain necessary to remove carbon emissions that cannot yet be avoided from the atmosphere. This is stated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the “Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report.” Removal is needed for both current emissions and past carbon emissions.
