‘Forteko’ Afforestation on degraded grasslands under extensive grazing

Grasslands that were grazed by livestock in the past are now planted with trees that remove carbon from the air and store it.

The 'Forteko' Afforestation on degraded grasslands under extensive grazing project is located in northeastern Uruguay. The project offers this underdeveloped region the opportunity to grow in terms of employment, infrastructure, and industry.

Contribution to the climate

The 'Forteko' project covers an area of 16,181 hectares. The land has a long history of grazing by sheep and cattle, which has reduced the quality of the soil. Now, Taeda pine forests have been planted. This tree grows quickly and reaches heights of between 30 and 50 meters. The forests remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the wood of the trees and in the soil. The wood is very suitable for use as a sustainable building and carpentry material and is FSC certified. Planting the land in this way restores the soil and prevents erosion.

Project organization

Management of this project

The day-to-day management of the project is in the hands of Cambium Forestal Uruguay, which specializes in forest management. The trees are regularly pruned and thinned. Every few years, the trees are felled and new trees are planted. The project takes great care in seed selection, site preparation, weed and pest control, and forest management to ensure wood productivity and the achievement of sustainability goals.

Project accountability

In order to bring 'Forteko' carbon credits to market, the project has completed the following steps:

  1. Project developer Forestal Tekoayhu conducted a feasibility study to assess whether the project could issue carbon credits for carbon offsetting.

  2. Forestal Tekoayhu registered the project with Verra.

  3. SCS Global Services validated the project documents and carbon removal claims.

  4. AENOR Internacional, S.A.U. periodically checks the project data to see if performance meets the set conditions.

  5. Verra issued carbon credits to Forestal Tekoayhu. Ecommit then purchased carbon credits from this project. All data and transactions can be viewed in the Verra registry.

Contribute to this project

'Forteko' is a long-term project developed to combat climate change, improve soil quality, and promote sustainable timber cultivation. Because the project region is located far from timber markets, carbon credits are necessary to help finance the project. By purchasing carbon credits with your company, you support this project and contribute to reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

The 'Forteko' project is important for the development of this region. It creates jobs and offers opportunities for new services and industrial development in the area.
