Delta Blue Carbon

Mangrove forests are being restored to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity, and improve the living conditions of local residents.

The Delta Blue Carbon Project covers an area of 350,000 hectares in the Sindh Indus Delta region in southeastern Pakistan. The mangrove forests in the delta have suffered from large-scale deforestation and tree degradation. These forests are now being restored so that they can capture and store carbon.

Contribution to the climate

The Indus Delta is a vast complex of canals, creeks, islands, mangrove forests, and tidal areas. The inhabitants depend on the delta for their livelihood. In the past, they often used the forests as a source of firewood and animal feed, and as grazing land for livestock. To restore and protect the mangrove forests, the Delta Blue Carbon project was established - the largest mangrove restoration project in the world. The forests remove and store carbon, and the development of the area also benefits the local population.

Project organization

Management of this project

The project area is owned by the state of Sindh and has protected status. The project provides employment opportunities for the local population in various ways. For example, new trees are planted in collaboration with local communities, and community members play a role in monitoring and supervising the area. For many residents, fishing is their main source of income. The restoration of the forests ensures that fish species that depend on mangroves once again have a habitat.

Project accountability

To bring Delta Blue Carbon's carbon credits to market, the project has completed the following steps:

  1. Project developer Indus Delta Capital conducted a feasibility study to assess whether the project could issue carbon credits for carbon offsetting.

  2. Indus Delta Capital registered the project with Verra.

  3. ICONTEC validated the project documents and carbon removal claims.

  4. An independent auditor checks the project data every year to see if performance meets the set conditions.

  5. Verra issued carbon credits to Indus Delta Capital. Ecommit then purchased carbon credits from this project. All data and transactions can be viewed in Verra's registry.

Contribute to this project

The Delta Blue Carbon Project combats climate change, preserves biodiversity, and creates better living conditions and employment opportunities for the communities that depend on this region. When your company purchases carbon credits, you support this project and contribute to reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

The project supports the livelihoods of sixty villages around the project area. These communities represent approximately 5,000 households and 43,000 people.
